High Paying Careers in England, Germany, Greece & the USA

Aug 31, 2007 Frank W. Hardy

The outsourcing and globalization of work is well understood. One solution, that is not often discussed, is leaving your home and working in another nation.

A comprehensive look at the top jobs from Europe and the USA. Except where specified the salaries are based on 1-2 years experience at that level.** It does not include Small Business owners and Entrepreneurs; actors, musicians and sports celebrities; Company Presidents, CEOs, and Corporate Directors; Stock Investment Fund Managers and Politicians; nor any illegal profession.

USA

In the USA the Medical profession is by far the best area for job seekers with the qualifications; however, there is a price. According to MPMLC (Michigan Physicians Mutual Liability Company) “insurance premiums…grew on average by more than 50 percent from 2002 to 2003 to $53,500…with some [doctors] paying more than $100,000 annually.” With a top Federal income tax rate of 39.6% and a state tax of an additional 0-11%, the “take-home” is lower.

The USA is a very large country with differences in climate, topography, and cost of living that provides for a variety of lifestyles.

  • Neurosurgeon: $487,155/yr

  • Cardiologists: $320,226/yr

  • Obstetricians and gynecologists: $233,430/yr

  • Anesthesiologists: $231,680/yr

  • Internists, general: $226,940/yr

England

In England pilots and government officials fare quite well. The UK has a top income tax rate of 40% and the salaries are fairly uniform throughout the country. In the USA these numbers vary wildly based upon the location.

Life in England is well known. An island nation densely populated whose national boundaries limit large climatic differences. However, cultural differences are highly localized compared to larger nations.

  • Aircraft Test Pilots £100,000 = $202,000

  • Public Sector Business Analyst £99,900 = $201,800

  • Doctors: £81,744 - $165,100

  • Financial Managers: £79,545 - $160,700

  • Senior Civil Servants £71,824 - $145,000

  • Airline Pilots: £61,585 - $124,400
Germany*

Germans tend to favor those in the managerial fields. Analysts from all areas do quite well however, massive opening exist for those managers and analysts in the financial fields. The recent banking scandals and the former East German problems, caused the government to demand an overhaul of the system. As a result there is a large demand for those with Western managerial and credit skills.

With the reunification of Germany, the country has diversified its landscape and culture. Those from the former East differ greatly with their Western counterparts and some internal problems exist. German tax rate is 42% maximum with a reunification tax of 5.5%; giving a marginal rate of 45% maximum.

  • Airline Pilots (experienced) €138,860 = $190,200

  • Bank Analyst €110,000 = $137,000

  • Credit Risk Managers €85,000 = $116,500

  • Marketing Managers €66,498 = $91,100

  • Developer Programmers €57,499 = $78,800

Greece

Our final European nation is the land of a thousand islands. Greece, long known as the cradle of western knowledge, has always had a large number of scholars and merchants. Home to most of the world’s shipping magnets; jobs abound for these specialties. The best paid jobs tend to be in the marine fields with ship’s captains doing the best. However, those research scientists also have great opportunities in Greece. The maximum tax rate is 40%; but, many of the high paid jobs in research, education and medicine have a much lower 20% maximum rate.

The climate in Greece, because of lower latitudes along with mild Mediterranean and Aegean waters, makes this country a vacation destination. The cost of living, while high, is still lower than most of Old Europe.

  • Container & Tanker Captains (experienced) € 102,000 = $139,800

  • Property/estate Managers €73,722 = $101,000

  • Tugboat/Harbor Captains €68,155 = $93,400

  • Doctors €66,500 = $91,200

  • Research Chemists €55,821 = $76,500

These nations have a diversity of high paying jobs for any seeker. Not only are they well paid but also they are in great demand. Under these circumstances, the laborer is in command and can choose that which he desires. If you need to retrain, pick one of these fields. if you want a different location we will look at Africa, the Middle East and the Developing Nations.

* Germany has a two tier salary system. Former East Germans (EG), in the same profession, are paid less than the former West Germans (WG). For example, WG doctors receive €45,600 while EG doctors receive €40,800

** Social Security (National Insurance), Medicare (included in NI) and Sales Tax (VAT) is not mentioned because most nations have similar systems - unless specifically specified.
